Atlas Mountains
Fertile valleys, networks of hiking paths, remote Berber villages and snow-smeared peaks across North Africa’s highest mountain range.
The three ranges of the Atlas Mountains create a striking, sometimes harsh barrier between the arid Sahara and Morocco’s milder coastal climate. The middle of these ranges, the High Atlas Mountains, begins close to the Atlantic in Agadir and run in a jagged line northeast through the country, encompassing some of the region’s most authentic pockets of culture.
The mountains’ broad russet slopes are dotted with scrubby pines and lacy cedars, and the peaks gleam with snow even in the warmer months. Dirt roads and narrow footpaths snake through the otherwise pristine landscape, and in the moist, green valleys you’ll wind past herds of goats, wild herbs and small, remote Berber villages.
Dades Gorge
The beautiful Dades Valley near Boumalne du Dades with the picturesque Dades Gorge and the spectacular serpentine road is one of the absolute highlights of a tour through Morocco. Whether by car or motorcycle, a drive through this canyon is a very special experience and truly adventurous. Visitors are thrilled by the color contrasts and the incredible scenic beauty. But the most spectacular section of the route is definitely the breathtaking Zik-Zak road, almost at the end of the canyon. But visitors also come from all over the world for hiking and trekking.
The Dades Valley in Morocco is located in the province of Thingir and is part of the imposing Atlas Mountains. Most famous is the Dades Gorge, the so-called “Gorges du Dadès“, which stretches from the oasis town of Boumalne Dadès to the north to the village of M’semrir. Along it runs a green river course that irrigates the valley and makes it lush, providing the livelihood for the many small villages. Also worth seeing and another attraction are the numerous well-preserved clay castles, the so-called Kasbahs, which were once built by the Berbers to defend themselves against enemies.
